Hatha & Raja Yoga

HathaYoga is not separate from Raja Yoga. Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga are therefore, the necessary counterparts of each other. No one can become a Yogi of a perfect order without the clear knowledge of these two Yogas.

Hatha Yoga relates to the physical body, Asanas, Pranayamas, Bandhas, Mudras, Kriyas, vow of silence, steady-gazing, crystal-gazing, etc. Raja Yoga begins where properly practiced Hatha Yoga ends. Raja Yoga is called the King of Yogas. Raja Yoga aims at controlling all thought waves or mental modifications. It concerns with the mind and it’s purification and control. This is the essence of Raja Yoga.

There are eight limbs (branches) in Raja Yoga. They are :

  1. Yama - Self-restraint.

  2. Niyama - Observances.

  3. Asana - Postures.

  4. Pranayama - Restraint of breath.

  5. Pratyahara - Abstraction of senses.

  6. Dharana - Concentration.

  7. Dhayana - Meditation &

  8. Samadhi - Super-conscious state.

A Raja Yogi gets his psychic powers by the combined practice of concentration, Meditation and Samadhi at one and the same time (YOGIC-SUMYAMA).
